From Schools & General Executive Jeffrey Fick: Building Up the Body of Christ

Building Up the Body of Christ

As we begin the month of February, we are reminded that our Lutheran education mission is to nurture the faith of our children while fostering excellence in education and discipleship. Our LCMS schools and educational ministries are important parts of this mission, working together to shape hearts and minds to serve God and our neighbor.

In this month’s article, we reflect on the unique role that Lutheran schools play in the lives of our students, families, and congregations. We also look ahead to opportunities for growth and partnership as we continue to build up the body of Christ through our educational efforts.

Lutheran schools are more than just places where students learn academic subjects; they are environments where the Gospel is at the heart of all that we do. Rooted in God’s Word, our schools foster an atmosphere of faith formation, where students are nurtured in their relationship with Christ and prepared to live their life in a world that needs the light of the Gospel.

Every day, our Lutheran schools engage children in learning that integrates both faith and knowledge. Through dedicated Christian teachers and staff who model Christ-like love, students are given the tools they need to excel academically, spiritually, emotionally, and socially. Our schools teach and share grace, where God’s love and the truths of Scripture transform lives, inspire learning, and encourage service.

As we celebrate National Lutheran Schools Week (January 25-31), it is fitting to pause and acknowledge the tireless efforts of our teachers. Their dedication to educating children in both faith and knowledge demonstrates the gifts God has given them. Lutheran educators are not just teachers of academics—they are mentors, guides, and spiritual leaders who help to shape the hearts and minds of the next generation of Christians.

We are thankful for their commitment to fostering an environment where students feel safe to ask questions, explore their faith, and grow in their understanding of God’s Word. Through their example, our students witness what it means to live out faith in a loving and supportive community.

Let us remember the importance of the work God has entrusted to us through our Lutheran schools. These ministries are places where faith is shared, nurtured, and lived out each day, and they play a crucial role in equipping the next generation of believers.

Let us pray for our schools, teachers, students, and families—that they may continue to grow in knowledge and faith, and that through their efforts, God’s Kingdom will be expanded. May God bless our schools, congregations, communities as we work together for the glory of His name.
