From Schools & General Executive Jeffrey Fick: A Time for Gratitude and Reflection

A Time for Gratitude and Reflection

As we approach Thanksgiving, a season traditionally marked by gratitude and reflection, it is an opportune time for us as professional church workers to inspire our congregations and schools to recognize and celebrate the blessings bestowed upon us by our Lord. Thanksgiving provides a unique opportunity to draw our communities closer to the heart of Scripture, encouraging expressions of thankfulness.

The Bible frequently calls us to give thanks. In 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, Paul tells us to: “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” This directive emphasizes that gratitude should not be contingent on our circumstances but rather rooted in our relationship with God. As we remind others of this truth, we encourage them to reflect on the many ways God has been faithful, even amidst life’s challenges.

Thanksgiving provides a perfect opportunity to focus on God’s goodness. Psalm 107:1 proclaims, “Oh give thanks to the Lord, for He is good, for His steadfast love endures forever!” This verse can serve as a key theme, prompting us to celebrate God’s unwavering love and provision.

As we gather around tables this Thanksgiving, let us also remember those who may be struggling. 2 Corinthians 9:11 reminds us, “You will be enriched in every way to be generous in every way, which through us will produce thanksgiving to God.” Encouraging acts of service and generosity not only fulfills Christ’s command to love our neighbors but also cultivates a spirit of thanksgiving that reflects the heart of our faith.

Let us also be reminded of the importance of prayer during this season. In Philippians 4:6-7, Paul writes, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.” This passage invites us to bring our concerns to God while expressing gratitude, reinforcing our trust in His divine provision and care.

As we prepare for Thanksgiving, let us lead in an understanding of what it means to be thankful. By focusing on Scripture and encouraging acts of service, we can create a culture of gratitude that honors God and strengthens our community ties. May this Thanksgiving be a time of joyful reflection on the countless blessings we have received from our gracious Lord.
