Women's Day of Renewal In Collinsville

RESPONDING WITH FAITH, based on Josh. 1:9, is the theme of the Women’s Day of Renewal planned for Friday evening and Saturday, Feb. 3-4, 2012, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Collinsville, Ill. Women of all ages are invited to attend; the registration dead- line is Jan. 15.

This year’s keynote, Faith for our Freakouts, will feature two speakers, Phyllis Wallace and Dr. Melanie Wilson. We live in a world threatened by fear, pressure, stress, anger and anxiety. The unknown assails us. What will happen next? Can we handle the next crisis or challenge? We doubt our own abilities and potential and do not trust God’s promises. When apprehension dictates our actions, we put God’s plan for our lives at risk.

Only one thing will conquer our emotional reactions: faith in God’s presence, protection, power and promises. We should never doubt what God can do with us when we trust and obey Him. Phyllis and Melanie will help participants identify their own individual fears, develop a game plan to seek God’s power and move forward toward replacing numbing fear with a strong faith.

The registration fees are: Friday and Saturday, $35; Friday only, $10; Saturday only, $25. A $15 late fee will apply after Jan. 15.

The fee includes a continental breakfast, catered lunch and two workshops chosen from a variety of topics, including songs of faith, combating stress, hands-on-servant event, marriage, communication, couponing, decorating your mantel and the joy of being a woman.

Church Is Older Than Synod

Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Wartburg was blessed to celebrate 170 years of ministry of the Word and Sacrament.  The observance was on October 30, 2011 and was planned to coincide with

the church’s family day.

The 10:00 a.m. service was conducted by Rev. Stuart Rethwisch, 23rd pastor of the congregation, assisted by Seminarian Dean Herberts.  After the service, Mrs. Arlene Baum gave a presentation of the church’s history.  After the meal, the children played games, and confirmation class slides and historical displays were viewed.  Tours were conducted of the newly renovated parsonage and the children were able to tour the church bell tower.

Present were a former teacher, Eldon (Gretchen) Gleichman of Champaign, Illinois.  Sons of the congregation were Rev. Luther (Doris) Strasen of Ft. Wayne, Indiana, son of former pastor, Rev. Bernhard Strasen;  Rev. Dennis W. (Jane) Schmidt of St. Louis  County, son of  the late Wilmer and Florence Schmidt of Wartburg.

The oldest congregational members are Mrs. Lillian (Thorburg) Kohlmeier, Mrs. Esther (Studt) Boehne, and Mrs. Audrey (Kohlmeier) Hoffmann, confirmed in 1932 and they were able to be present for the celebration.
